Corinth Pipeworks & IGI Poseidon advance H₂ testing
Athens, August 2025
IGI Poseidon announces a significant achievement in its journey toward future-proof energy infrastructure: the successful completion of a rigorous hydrogen feasibility program for the IGI Poseidon pipelines, conducted in partnership with CORINTH PIPEWORKS.
The challenge was: to validate whether the IGI Poseidon pipelines, designed for ultra-deep offshore transport, are suitable to carry 100% hydrogen at high pressures.
Over the past year, a comprehensive research and testing campaign was carried out at Corinth Pipeworks’ hydrogen laboratory. The program included mechanical testing on large-diameter X70 steel pipe material and girth welds under hydrogen conditions simulating long-term operational scenarios.
Key technical assessment include:
- Fracture toughness and slow strain rate tensile testing on material and girth weld.
- Full fatigue lifecycle modeling over 50+ years of operation.
- Engineering Critical Assessment.
The results confirm that the selected pipe configuration maintains structural integrity under 200 bar hydrogen pressure with a calculated safe design life over 50 years. These findings validate the readiness of steel linepipe technology to meet future offshore hydrogen transpor demands, in a context where international design codes are under definition.
