The Egnatia Odos concession agreement to Nea Egnatia Odos Operator S.A. [GEK TERNA S.A. (75%), EGIS PROJECTS S.A. (25%) consortium], includes major maintenance works for the modernization of the motorways’ tunnels.

Αlong Egnatia Odos, 100 km consist of tunnels, which were constructed over twenty years ago.  As a result, they do not comply with the European Standards set in 2007 and the specifications of the Tunnel Administrative Authority (DAS) and require to undergo major maintenance works.

C&M Engineering has been assigned by GEK TERNA with the electrical installations upgrade for thirty-three (33) tunnels each one over 600 metres in length and over 40 km per direction in total. The project is expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.

The motorway known as Egnatia Odos stretches for 658 km from Igoumenitsa in Thesprotia to Kipoi in Evros, connecting nine (9) regions: Thesprotia, Ioannina, Grevena, Kozani, Imathia, Thessaloniki, Kavala, Xanthi, and Rodopi.

Key technical features include a four-lane motorway (two lanes plus an emergency lane per direction), 63 interchanges, 177 bridges (over 50 metres in length with a total span of approximately 40 km), 73 tunnels (with a combined length of around 50 km), 350 overpasses, 43 river crossings, and 11 railway crossings.

“Egnatia Odos is one of the most challenging infrastructure projects in Greece.

The studies were carried out in the 1990s, and construction — through fragmented contracting arrangements — lasted from 1998 to 2009, creating major inconsistencies in technical solutions and equipment.  As a result, the new concessionaire inherited infrastructure without certification and with little meaningful maintenance carried out in recent years.

Through investments of €500 million over the next five years, Egnatia Odos will be transformed into a safe, smart, green, and energy-autonomous motorway, equipped with advanced traffic management systems, reaffirming its role as a central European artery, a gateway to the Balkans, and a catalyst for the development of Northern Greece”.
