ARIADNE Interconnection in commercial operation

According to an announcement by the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO): ​

The Crete-Attica HVDC Interconnection Project or ARIADNE Interconnection entered continuous operation mode for two months, following the successful completion of the project’s System Acceptance Tests (SAT) by the Contractor, in collaboration with ARIADNE Interconnection and IPTO (Independent Power Transmission Operator).​

Subsequently the largest and most complex electricity transmission project constructed in Greece will be put into commercial operation. The Project aims to ensure the energy security of the four regional units of Crete and gradually eliminate the island’s polluting power generation units.

KEY PROJECT DATA

  • Transmission capacity at 1.000 MW (2 x 500 MW).
  • Two submarine 500kV cables.
  • Laid in sea depths of up to 1.200 meters.
  • Two converter stations (Koumoundourou & Damasta).
  • One GIS 150 kV substation.
  • Minimum visual & environmental nuisance.
  • Zero CO₂ emissions for energy production in Crete.
